When installing certain applications, the setup wizard may modify your file associations system. It can be caused by a specific instruction which can not be controlled or it can be caused by lack of attention when installing the application. In any case, the results are always the same: you will notice that MP3 files are launched with a different media player, images are opened with another application and so on. To address this issue, you can use Types to restore your file associations. It is a lightweight application which supports any file format and you can use it to change their associations and other aspects.

After running the 200 Kb setup file, a small window will show up, on which you can select a language, choose to place shortcuts and context menu options and select a destination path. When you are done, you may click the Install button, in the lower right corner of the same window and the software will be installed almost instantly.

All file types that are present on your hard drive are listed on the application's interface. To avoid scrolling through a huge list, you can use a search function to find a specific extension instantly. Once you find the format you are looking for, you can rename it, delete it or edit its properties.

An extension's properties are edited on a separate window. The options are not many and you can find them under separate tabs. You can change a file type's name and class, associate it with a different icon, make its extension visible or not or use Windows Explorer's default settings. You may also make that file type to be perceived as audio, video, text, messages and more.

Types makes it possible to define a sequence of actions for a file type. You can find a type's pre set actions under a separate tab, on the properties editing window and create new actions or edit existing ones. For example, if you edit the MP3 file format, the actions you will find are "Enqueue", "Open" and "Play", but you can change them, using a series of rules.

Pros

Types is compatible with all file formats and it lets you change their associations, icons and much more. The software is not difficult to use and it will not waste any resources. Another piece of good news is that Types is freeware.

Cons

An Undo or Restore option would be helpful. Due to its straightforward functions and low system requirements of Types, media files, documents and many other files can be associated with any application.
